A new scheme unveiled by BT could make streaming media more widely available to UK consumers.
The company has announced that it plans to allow rival high-speed internet providers to use its broadband networks. As part of the agreement, other broadband providers will be able to supply homes with internet access via their own fibre optics networks using BT's ducts. It is estimated that up to ten million homes will benefit from the scheme and 100Mb broadband will be made available to around 40 per cent of homes. BT's established networks will provide a stable infrastructure conducive to quality streaming media. The scheme will also enable areas previously unable to receive broadband connections to engage with streaming media content via high-speed internet connections. Chris Marling, editor of BroadbandGenie.co.uk, said: "The opening up of BT's pipes to its rivals could only be good for consumers, encouraging swifter technological advancement which will equate to an improvement in speed, then price." ![]() |
