Streaming video website YouTube has launched a new measurement tool that allows consumers to test their broadband speeds.
The website now features a section called My Speed, where web users can discover their specific average video speed measured over a month. Consumers will also be able to use the measurement tool to compare their broadband speeds to wider national and global figures. YouTube hopes the new feature will allow users to determine whether their internet connection is able to cope with the streaming video via the site. The speed numbers shown in the dashboard will be calculated by measuring the speed at which YouTube streaming video content is being received by the browser and speeds are averaged over the previous 30 days. Google product manager Amit Agarwal told Wired.com: "Speed is really important to us; we've been working very actively on making the web faster and also sharing with companies and users all around the world so that we can have a better web experience."
