Internet service providers have to be clearer about their unlimited packages, an expert has said.
Edd Dawson, editor of Broadband.co.uk, said very few deals are truly unlimited and they typically come with fair usage policies, so users should read the small print before they begin streaming content online. "There is a lot of smoke and mirrors when it comes to unlimited deals," Mr Dawson said. "Broadband providers could improve their service [by] being more open with people in terms of when they will get limits." He added that many web users themselves do not understand what their broadband limits mean so they could be risking extra penalties for over usage. Michael Phillips, product director of Broadband Choices, recently warned football fans to beware of breaching their bandwidth limit when watching World Cup matches this summer. He pointed out that streaming just one World Cup match alone in HD will use up around 2.4GB and with 50 games scheduled to be broadcast online in June, fans could see their allowances being used up very quickly. ![]() |
