A BT ad campaign that claimed to offer consumers instant video streaming services has been banned by the Advertising Standards Association (ASA).
The high-profile ad said BT's fibre optic broadband could upload and share high quality photos and videos, download favourite music and stream HD movies and TV shows instantly was misleading. After four complaints, the ASA ruled that BT's "birth of the instant internet" strapline gave a false representation of real-time speeds that consumers could expect to receive and breached two ASA codes of substantiation and truthfulness. "We noted that BT had provided a list of the times they believed it would take to complete the activities stated in the ad, using their fibre-optic broadband," the ASA commented. "However, we also noted that we had not seen evidence that substantiated those times." BT responded that because its fibre optic broadband allows users to get online in less than a few seconds, it does not believe the instant internet claim was problematic. ![]() |
