Web users are increasingly spending their time engaging with streaming content and social media, a new study has found.
A survey from Nielsen revealed that consumers are now spending almost a quarter of their online time posting videos, pictures and comments on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Social networking is becoming increasingly popular, having witnessed a 43 per cent surge in usage from June 2009 to June 2010. The US-based survey found that online gaming is the second most popular online activity, accounting for ten per cent of online use, followed by email in third place at 8.3 per cent. Online streaming videos and movies captured a 3.9 per cent share of the time spent online in June this year, the survey found. Dave Martin, an analyst at Nielsen, said: "Despite the almost unlimited nature of what you can do on the web, 40 per cent of US online time is spent on just three activities - social networking, playing games and emailing." ![]() |
