Many web surfers are clueless about the amount of bandwidth they are allocated, new research reveals.
A survey conducted by Eclipse Internet found that although eight in ten people actually know what bandwidth is, they have no idea about how much they have on their own broadband service. This lack of knowledge about bandwidth capacity could be resulting in consumers exceeding their allowances. Almost half (44 per cent) of consumers said they carry out activities that take up a lot of bandwidth, such as streaming online videos on websites such as YouTube and using video chat applications. The nationwide study, which questioned more than 1,300 people, also found that many consumers do not receive guidance about their broadband connections from their internet service providers. Nearly three-quarters (72 per cent) of respondents said they did not get any help or information from their broadband suppliers about how to make the most of their bandwidth. Clodagh Murphy, director of Eclipse, called on broadband providers to be more open and transparent in their web provision, so consumers can know exactly what to expect from their broadband services. ![]() |
