The BBC has confirmed that it is to launch a new high-quality audio streaming service.
The corporation has confirmed that its new audio streaming service - HD Sound - will be used for Radio 3 broadcasts from December and, before that, will be used for the Electric Proms on Radio 2 later this month. Higher bit rates and improved encoding feature in the new streaming service, which the BBC claims will offer its highest audio quality broadcast so far. A wider dynamic range also forms part of the package offered by HD Sound, which helps to accentuate the differences between quiet and loud sounds. Initially, the streaming package will only be available for live programmes,. "HD Sound is an exciting development and a signal of our commitment to innovate in digital radio for the benefit of our listeners," said Tim Davie, director of BBC Audio and Music. The new audio streaming service was first publicly tested during the final week of the Proms. ![]() |
