The UK is "unlikely" to meet European Union (EU) targets concerning the introduction of broadband services and this could have an adverse impact on streaming media in the future.
Richard Patterson, a director at Broadband Expert, said that without substantial investment from the government, the likelihood of meeting the EU's target of giving every European access to broadband by 2013 is slim. He commented: "The current average broadband speed is just over six Mbps and many people in rural communities cannot achieve anything near this." Mr Patterson added that this should not be the case for those in urban areas, however, as speeds of up to 30 Mbps should be achievable. According to statistics from the European Information Society, 29 per cent of EU broadband lines had speeds of at least 10 Mbps in July 2010 - up from 15 per cent one year earlier. Furthermore, broadband take-up continues to grow in the EU with 25.6 subscriptions for every 100 citizens (23.9 per cent in 2009). ![]() |
