The introduction of data caps in Canada has meant that streaming video supplier Netflix has taken the decision to reduce its streaming media quality for users in the country, it has been revealed.
A representative for Netflix admitted that "there is some lessening of picture quality with these new settings", but insists that "the experience continues to be great." The caps are being implemented by network providers Rogers, Bell Canada and Shaw and will see internet users limited to downloads of 15 GB per month in order to ensure capacity for the networks are not exceeded. At present, streaming media downloads can use up to 2.3 GB per hour if in full HD format. However, the new Netflix settings will limit users to 656 KB downloads - meaning this usage is reduced to 0.3 GB per hour. Meanwhile, Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, recently noted that life prior to high-speed internet services was "an awful lot different" to today. He stated that innovations like home working, online shopping and streaming media could not have come about without this technology. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
