Microsoft has announced an upgrade to its Silverlight media platform to enable the product to deliver additional streaming video options for users.
According to Tech Radar, the new Silverlight 5 release operates in much the same way as Adobe's Flash system, as it is a browser plug-in offering video, apps, tools and games. The new 64-bit version of the software adds more than 40 new features for users and also provides 3D graphics support. Microsoft said in a statement that the product "adds significant new features and capabilities, and enables developers to create premium media experiences and deliver rich applications across browsers, desktops and devices". Windsor Holden, the principal analyst at Juniper Research, noted that the streaming video market for mobiles is presently growing at a significant rate. He argued that the burgeoning mobile entertainment market will continue to draw in new users over the coming months and years, in what could be good news for streaming media providers.
