A new on-demand pay service is being launched by YouTube to cash into the lucrative pay-as-you-watch streaming video market, it has been revealed.
The company is set to bring in major Hollywood studios in order to deliver the latest blockbuster titles to its customers in an on-demand manner. YouTube launched a small-scale streaming film product last year - YouTube Movies - but this latest development will see the site offering licensed releases from such studios as Warner Bros, Lionsgate and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Despite this, labels such as Paramount and Fox continue to hold out against the move, having already signed agreements with Apple iTunes. However, Daniel Ashdown, a research analyst with Juniper Research, recently warned that growing demand for the latest streaming video content could be putting a strain on mobile networks. He noted that high demands for such services could overload networks if morte bandwidth is not made available. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
