oss the UK have come to the understanding that broadband is now an essential service and it is perceived in the same way as utilities like gas and electric. Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, said there are many opportunities that individuals who do not receive fibre-optic broadband and other forms of internet service are missing out on, such as on-demand streaming video services like the BBC's iPlayer, as well as a host of other multimedia attractions. He commented: "The majority of people would consider it [to be] an essential service nowadays, especially the younger generation." Cumbria County Council leader Eddie Martin recently noted that the introduction of superfast broadband facilities by 2015 has now become the top priority for his local authority. He argued that delivering minimum speeds of 100 Mbps to 100 per cent of properties in the area is an achievable goal, the News & Star reported. ![]() |
