Streaming media providers operating in Scotland could be set to receive a significant boost following the announcement that rural parts of the country are to see investment in broadband services.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has launched a new procurement tender for companies to install next-generation broadband services across areas of Scotland that are presently poorly provided for in this manner. Alex Paterson, chief executive officer of HIE, said: "Our ultimate aim is for all our communities to benefit, throughout all parts of the Highlands and Islands. At this first stage we are committed to seeing a fair spread across the region." The announcement follows news that the government's Broadband Delivery UK office has granted HIE a portion of its £530 million budget. Meanwhile, World IPv6 Day took place last week, marking the first time that the newest IP infrastructure was tested on sites live across the globe. A host of international companies took part in the tests, including Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, Akamai, Limelight Networks and many more. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
