Streaming media services providers may be pleased to learn that the European Commission (EC) has announced the award of €22.3 million (£19.98 million) to a number of research projects into the delivery of superfast fibre optic broadband.
A three-year research scheme has been set up that will see 13 projects in all examining the difficulties in expanding fibre optic bandwidth and speeds, with the aim of delivering access to superfast networks to 50 per cent of all Europeans by 2020. Neelie Kroes, vice president of the EC for the Digital Agenda, said: "I'm very happy that research on technology relevant to delivering super fast Internet speeds to the homes and businesses of 500 million Europeans is taking off." Meanwhile, Microsoft recently announced it is carrying out research into the use of white space to provide additional spectrum for wireless mobile networks. It is examining ways to transmit content in the spaces in the spectrum that are presently not used between TV channels, ensuring ultra-high frequency bandwidth is optimised in the future.
