Gamers across the UK may be pleased to learn that a new on-demand games platform is set to be made available for UK subscribers at the upcoming Eurogamer Expo on September 22nd.
OnLive UK offers users the chance to stream the latest games direct to their television sets via their home broadband connection, doing away with the need for powerful, top-spec computers to run the latest titles. The system utilises a combination of extremely powerful servers, broadband connectivity and BT-powered infrastructure that criss-crosses the UK, delivering on-demand games to users. It consists of a 'micro-console' set-top box which streams information from OnLive's servers in real-time, although the system's designers say a connection of at least 2Mbps is required for games to run smoothly. Obviously the key to the system working successfully depends on reducing latency to a minimum and to this end Onlive have opened a new European server facility in Luxembourg, placing its servers closer to the user. As well as offering titles for set-top gamers on HD TVs, OnLive UK is also set to feature downloadable clients for PC and Mac and apps for Android tablets and the iPad. Posted by Emma Johnson ![]() |
