The growth of social media sites like Facebook has been a blessing in disguise for the music industry, it has been claimed.
According to Business Insider, streaming audio downloads are growing in popularity and this is helping to offset falling physical sales for CDs. Indeed, the music industry is now actively getting involved with these sites to help boost word of mouth about new records. The modus operandi behind this support lies in letting social groups promote these records to their friends and allowing them to purchase online at the touch of a button. It is hoped that young people will be more responsive to the recommendations of their peers than they would be to high-cost advertising and corporate slickness. Streaming music providers like Spotify are now actively linking to Facebook and Twitter, with the trend looking likely to continue for the music industry to use social interaction to showcase the latest talents. Interestingly, Facebook is currently the second largest online video referrer, accounting for more than 16 per cent of YouTube traffic. Only Google ranks higher than the social media site.
