Wal-Mart Vudu has consolidated its position in the streaming video sector and has boosted its market share for movie downloads five-fold in the US in the last 12 months.
Figures compiled by IHS Screen Digest Media Research revealed the company had cornered just one per cent of the market back in the first half of 2010, but according to the latest figures for H1 2011, the firm's influence has now grown to 5.3 per cent. Wal-Mart acquired the online film service last year and the move has seen Vudu jump ahead of its rivals Amazon and the Sony PlayStation store in the US. However, big players Apple iTunes and Microsoft's Zune Video Marketplace continue to dominate in the US, holding market shares of 65.8 and 16.2 per cent respectively. Recently published figures from comScore placed Google as the leading worldwide streaming video provider. The report showed the online search provider had 158.1 million unique viewers using the site in the US alone and users logged 353.7 minutes of viewing on average in July.
