Research carried out by Ericsson ConsumerLab has revealed there is a growing trend for people to switch to on-demand streaming video services, as well as using social media while viewing.
Anders Erlandsson of Ericsson ConsumerLab said the increase in on-demand viewing has been fuelled by greater freedom and simplicity for the viewer. Figures from the group showed the proportion of individuals who use social networking sites while watching TV has risen to 40 per cent in the last year, while the uptake of on-demand streaming video rose during this period from 30 to 33 per cent. He commented: "On-demand viewing is increasingly popular, while broadcast viewing has remained as the most common way for people to watch TV." Mr Erlandsson added that people want both broadcast and on-demand viewing. The figures were based on 13,000 representatives from the US, UK, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Taiwan. Meanwhile, data from In-Stat recently showed that tablet owners have a growing desire to watch streaming video on these devices, with 50 per cent now watching both feature-length movies and TV programming using the technology.
