Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer has announced the upcoming launch of the much-anticipated Xbox TV that will provide on-demand streaming video for console users.
He stated the release will come in time for the festive season in the UK, with live TV and on-demand video content from possibly "hundreds of providers" being made available to subscribers. Mr Ballmer did not say in which regions the service would be coming to first and was fairly vague about the details of the deal, but it bodes well for the streaming video sector in general, with more users set to see the benefits of on-demand streaming media in the coming months. It will utilise Bing and Kinect voice controls to allow users to search for content and with just a few months left until Christmas, it is clear Microsoft is gearing up for a big marketing push on this front in the near future. According to research carried out by Knowledge Networks earlier this month, the number of people making use of over-the-top (OTT) streaming video services has increased by 30 per cent so far this year. OTT is a term used for services that individuals utilise over a network that is not offered by their network operator. Posted by Emma Johnson ![]() |
