The BBC has announced it is set to launch a version of its popular UK iPlayer application in Australia, providing on-demand streaming video content from the BBC for Australian audiences.
Its global iPlayer will serve as a video-on-demand service for users and will enable viewers to access more than 1,000 hours of content from the BBC's back catalogue, with more content set to be added all the time. Set to be exclusive to iPad users at first, new platforms for the worldwide service are set to be launched in due course should the Australian pilot scheme prove a success, with the BBC set to gauge demand for iPlayer before launching in larger markets like the US. Jana Bennett, president of BBC Worldwide Networks and iPlayer, told ABC: "There isn't a plan to have a license fee per se, but there is potential to answer the pent-up demand by having something like this." Meanwhile, the BBC is collaborating with a host of other content and internet service providers in the creation of the new YouView streaming video platform in the UK. The firm has this week launched a user interface and search consultation, with the aim of an official launch for the service early next year. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
