YouTube is expanding its offering of streaming video to the UK by introducing a rental service for full-length movies.
Following the introduction of similar services in the US and Canada over the last year, the online video sharing giant is rolling out the functionality in the UK with an initial line-up of more than 1,000 feature films. At launch, the YouTube on-demand movie library includes major studio releases such as The Dark Knight, Hanna, Fast Five and Red Riding Hood, while the YouTube Movie Extras service offers additional content, such as interviews and clips. New releases cost £3.49, with older titles available for £2.49 or £3.49 in high definition. Users will have 30 days in which to begin watching a rented film and a 48-hour window once they press play. YouTube's streaming movie service launch will see the company entering an increasingly competitive market, with FilmFlex Movies and 4oD announcing their own on-demand movie service last month. Among its main rivals will be Amazon-owned LOVEFiLM, which offers a streaming movie library including content from Disney, Lionsgate, Warner Bros and Studio Canal, among other companies.
