A new streaming media service called Vdio is to be introduced in the UK, courtesy of Skype cofounder Janus Friis.
The team behind the new service has confirmed to GigaOM that Vdio is to offer streaming TV and movie content and will rival the likes of Netflix and LOVEFiLM, with closed beta testing currently ongoing. Confirmation came after the technology website reported that Mr Friis has been developing a video-based companion to the Rdio streaming music service for almost two years. The service's website promises to offer films such as The Dark Knight, Ghostbusters and The Karate Kid, as well as TV shows including Breaking Bad and Mad Men. A management team including former Skype, Napster, Microsoft and TV Guide staff have been recruited to operate the service, which will be privately funded and managed separately from Rdio. Pricing and launch details will be confirmed at a later date, with the UK set to be its only market initially. Posted by Emma Johnson ![]() |
