Movie rental company Blockbuster is readying the launch of an online streaming video service in the UK.
The firm, which has seen revenue declines from its brick-and-mortar business in recent years, is teaming up with set-top box manufacturer and cloud data specialist EchoStar to introduce the new service in 2012. Gerry Butler, Blockbuster's commercial director, told New Media Age that streaming services will be available to connected devices such as web TVs and games consoles, although he did not disclose what pricing model would be used. This mirrors similar plans being implemented in the US within the coming weeks by the brand's parent company Dish Network. "With the younger generation that has grown up watching online, you have to offer them a compelling [digital] service … you have to make sure you get it right," explained Mr Butler. This comes after US streaming media giant Netflix announced last month that it will also be expanding into the UK in 2012. Posted by Thomas Price ![]() |
