Microsoft is to enhance the streaming media capabilities of its Xbox Live online service through the acquisition of video discovery technology company VideoSurf.
Over the coming months, the multinational computing giant will be integrating VideoSurf technology into the Xbox 360 games console user experience, providing advanced search functions for online media content. VideoSurf uses back-end computer vision innovations to "see" frames of streamed videos, allowing users to visually navigate content and identify videos more precisely than they would be able to using text-based tags. The web-based service can be used to search videos from providers including Hulu, YouTube, Dailymotion, CNN, Fancast and others. This takeover coincides with Microsoft's planned introduction of Kinect-based voice search functions for Xbox Live this Christmas. Alex Garden, director of Xbox Live for the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft, said: "As we integrate VideoSurf's technology into our system, we are excited about the potential to have content tagged in real time to increase the speed and relevance of the search results."
