Amazon has revealed that its CloudFront online content delivery service has seen its client base double since last year.
The web service, which provides customers with tools for low latency, high-speed static and streaming content distribution, now has more than 200,000 active users, rising from just 43 in October 2008. According to Amazon, this makes CloudFront the largest content delivery network (CDN) in the world, with clients including large enterprises such as IBM and Sega, as well as smaller start-up firms. The ecommerce company reported that positive feedback has been received for the service's scalability and performance, as well as its pay-as-you-go pricing model. Senior evangelist for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Jeff Barr said: "Amazon CloudFront has been a big hit. We're adding customers, locations and features at a rapid clip." Responding to the figures, StreamingMedia.com executive vice-president Dan Rayburn said Amazon's ability to spend years building CloudFront, despite revenue losses, will help to establish it as "one of the few big players" in the CDN space.
