The BBC has launched a new iPlayer application for the iPhone and iPod Touch as part of an expansion of its mobile streaming services.
Launching via Apple's App Store this week, the software introduces a number of features such as easy channel-switching and AirPlay compatibility, allowing users to stream content to their TV sets using an Apple TV device. The launch of the new app is accompanied by a new arrangement with mobile network operators that allows content to be accessed using a 3G connection, with streaming enhanced by the use of the HTTP Live Streaming video infrastructure. AirPlay and 3G capabilities are also being introduced for the iPad version of iPlayer, while the BBC will also be adding 3G functionality to its Android app in the new year. David Madden, executive product manager for BBC iPlayer on mobile, said: "This is the first release of the BBC iPlayer app for iPhones and iPod Touches and it will, of course, evolve and improve as we refine the interface and add features." This comes as Microsoft prepares to introduce streaming BBC content to its Xbox Live online service for Xbox 360 for the first time at some point in 2012. Posted by Thomas Price ![]() |
