Viewership of online TV services has seen a reduced rate of growth in the last year, new figures from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (Barb) have shown.
According to figures compiled in November 2011, 15 per cent of UK viewers watched TV content over the internet using a PC, laptop or computer during the period, a small rise from around 14 per cent the previous year. Meanwhile, streaming viewership via mobile devices such as smartphones also saw only a small increase, from around two per cent in November 2010 to three per cent last year. According to Barb's analysis, the relatively slow growth seen in 2011 can be explained by the rising popularity of digital set-top boxes and catch-up services for internet TVs, including Sky+. The audience measurement body also suggested that the use of online TV services is most prevalent among those in the 15-to-34 age bracket. Last month, a report from Ofcom suggested that viewership of online TV services among regular internet users in the UK stands at 27 per cent, up three percentage points on 2010.
