Online media platform provider Roku has developed a miniaturised wireless peripheral for US TVs that will make it easier for consumers to stream video content to their sets.
The Roku Streaming Stick is a device the size of a USB flash drive that plugs directly into the HDMI port of Mobile High-Definition Link-compatible TVs, which essentially transforms the set into a smart TV. It incorporates Wi-Fi functionality, a processor, onboard memory and software, thus foregoing the need for an external set box, HDMI cable or power adapter, while it can also be controlled via the TV remote. According to Roku, the stick's streaming capabilities can be regularly updated via software downloads, while its easily replaceable nature helps consumers to avoid their TVs becoming obsolete. Roku founder and chief executive officer Anthony Wood said: "Extending the Roku streaming experience through the Roku Streaming Stick to smart TVs is a natural next step for the market." The Smart Stick will debut in the second half of 2012, by which time Roku will have made its recently-announced debut in the UK, Canada and other nations. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
