Cloud gaming service OnLive has expanded its business model with the launch of new streaming applications for iPad that offer access to Windows applications.
Aimed at corporate customers and regular consumers, the OnLive Desktop app is being made available on January 12th 2012 and allows users to gain remote access to fully-featured Windows 7 programs, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Streamed from high-end cloud-based PC servers, the programs have been optimised for tablet operation via multi-touch controls, an onscreen keyboard and handwriting recognition, while support for video, animations and games are also offered. OnLive intends to roll out the cloud-based Windows experience to other devices soon, including Android tablets, smartphones, PCs and Macs, as well as TVs connected to the OnLive MicroConsole. Steve Perlman, OnLive's founder and chief executive officer, said: "OnLive Desktop is the first app to deliver a no-compromise, media-rich Windows desktop experience to iPad, opening up powerful new possibilities for consumers and businesses." This comes after OnLive launched a streaming games application for mobile devices last month, allowing users to play leading console and PC releases on their tablets and smartphones.
