Channel 4 has announced plans to make its entire back catalogue of programmes available online completely free of charge. The unprecedented move, which will be implemented from July, will make Channel 4 the first UK broadcaster to put such an extensive range of video content online for no charge. More than 4,000 hours of streaming content - around 10,000 programme titles - will be included on the 4oD catch-up service, allowing viewers to watch classic British-made programmes such as Father Ted and Brookside. The current service allows users to watch programmes for just 30 days after they are broadcast, but the new development means web users will be able to view older content whenever it suits them. "We are extremely proud of the improved service and think the combination of fantastic content that's easy to find and view will prove compelling for all users," said Jon Gisby, the director of future media and technology at Channel 4. "We were the first broadcaster to launch a comprehensive video-on-demand service in 2006, and since that time 4oD has become one of the UK's most popular video on-demand brands."
