Virgin Media and Universal Music have announced plans to unveil a new digital streaming music service. The service, which goes live later this year, will allow Virgin Media broadband users to stream and download an unlimited number of tracks from Universal Music's entire catalogue for a monthly subscription fee. An "entry level" service will be offered to customers who download streaming content regularly but do not want unlimited service. Virgin Media is also in talks with other major UK record labels to complement the deal it has already struck with Universal Music. Neil Berkett, chief executive of Virgin Media, said: "In terms of both convenience and value, our new music service will be superior to anything that's available online today and provides a fair deal for both consumers and artists." Last year, Virgin Media and the British Phonographic Industry unveiled a campaign aimed at educating users about how to download music from the internet without breaking the law. ![]() |
