Media company Time Warner has teamed up with Comcast to devise a new fee-paying online streaming video service. The new TV Everywhere offering allows cable subscribers to view television content via broadband internet connections. Around 5,000 Comcast subscribers will gain access to the pilot scheme from next month, allowing them to view streaming content from Time Warner's TBS and TNT channels on their computers. Viewers will also have access to TBS and TNT's video on demand catalogues on their cable set top boxes as part of the service. US-based interest group Public Knowledge criticised the move, saying it is not beneficial to most consumers. "Under the TV Everywhere plan, no other programme distributors would be able to emerge," said Gigi B Sohn, president and co-founder of the organisation. "No consumers will be able to cut the cord because they find what they want online. As a result, consumers will be the losers." Time Warner and Comcast's announcement comes shortly after Channel 4 unveiled plans to make its entire back catalogue of programmes available to users for no charge. ![]() |
