The number of adults who watch streaming video content on websites such as YouTube has almost doubled over the past three years. Figures from Pew Internet reveal that 62 per cent of adults watch streaming content on video-sharing sites - up from just 33 per cent in December 2006. The figure is much higher for younger web users, with 89 per cent of those aged between 18 and 29 saying they view streaming content on such sites. Overall, 19 per cent of web users said they visit video-sharing sites on a typical day - up from just eight per cent in 2006. The survey also found the internet is displacing the television and cinema when it comes to viewing time. More than a third (35 per cent) of adults and almost two-thirds (61 per cent) of younger web users said they have watched TV shows and movies online. Recent figures from comScore show that the number of steaming videos watched online in April reached 4.7 billion - a 47 per cent increase from last year.
