The domination of the online music market by iTunes is not infallible and is waiting to be challenged, an expert has claimed. Colin Polonowski, publisher at music news and reviews website The Music Fix, said that the audio download market is still in its infancy so there is plenty of room for other "big players" to step in and claim a sizeable share. He identified streaming music service Spotify as a potential pretender to iTunes' throne, but maintained that it first needs to match the size of iTunes' music catalogue. "Spotify has a lot of work to do," Mr Polonowski conceded. "However, [it] has huge potential to become the major player - they already have good press coverage and [it's new] mobile app will only serve to let more people know about and use the service." He added that paying for a streaming service where consumers will never own the content is a "psychological barrier" preventing many music fans from parting with their cash. Spotify recently announced the launch of its mobile service, which is powered by Google's operating system Android. ![]() |
