Prime minister Gordon Brown has unveiled new plans to enable every household to have access to faster streaming services and government information.
Mr Brown outlined his vision of every citizen having access to super-fast broadband and MyGov, an online portal where people can manage tax credits, pensions and arrange doctor's appointments. The service will also enable parents to communicate with their children's teachers or obtain a new passport. It is estimated that the portal will be of particular benefit to the four million people who are among the heaviest users of government services but who have never used the internet. Downing Street also unveiled its own iPhone application, which allows users to gain access to news and streaming video and audio content from the Downing Street website. In addition, Mr Brown announced that £30 million will be spent on establishing a new Institute of Web Science, which will be headed by industry figures Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt. ![]() |
