Video sharing website YouTube has launched a new online streaming video rental service.
The service was released on a limited ten-day trial basis earlier this year, but has now officially gone live, allowing web users to rent video content for a period of 24 hours to 72 hours. Viewers will be able to rent from a large collection of video content, including TV programmes and full-length Hollywood blockbusters. Video rentals will be made available from between 99 cents and $3.99. It was reported earlier this year by the New York Times that the rental service made $10,709 during its ten-day trial by renting out films that were featured in the Sundance film festival. A spokesperson for YouTube said: "When we announced YouTube Rentals in January we said we would be creating a destination after more partners joined the programme. To date, we have nearly 500 partners that have joined our Rental programme. " ![]() |
