YouTube has censored a controversial music video by British rap artist MIA on its website.
The explicit nine-minute promotional video for MIA's latest single Born Free features red-headed youngsters being rounded up and driven into a desert to be shot and beaten. The video was launched online on Monday this week but has been since censored by YouTube. The video is now only available to users who sign up for a YouTube account and are over the age of 18. A spokesperson for YouTube explained that videos are only pulled from the site if users lodge complaints. "On YouTube the rules prohibit content like pornography or gratuitous violence," she said. "Our policy is to age-restrict content that has been flagged by the community and identified by our policy enforcement team as content that, while not violating our community guidelines, is not suitable for users under age 18." MIA, who is of Sri Lankan descent, is an outspoken activist who has described the political situation in Sri Lanka as "systematic genocide, ethnic cleansing". ![]() |
