The government has been urged to roll out superfast broadband services across the country so Britain is not left behind in the digital revolution.
According to the Fibre to the Home (FTTH) Council, 100Mbps internet connections must be on offer as soon as possible if the UK wants to have any hope of keeping up with broadband technology and innovation around the world. Chris Holden, president of the FTTH Council, explained that although the UK is a leader in first-generation broadband, it is still lagging behind when it comes to next-generation access. "Many Eastern European countries, including Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Slovenia, already have more FTTH subscribers than the UK, both as a percentage of total households and in absolute numbers," he said. Mr Holden added that in contrast to the UK, countries such as Sweden, which is one of the leading FTTH nations in Europe, currently supplies more than 500,000 homes with fibre-optic connections. ![]() |
