Streaming video viewership is set to rise noticeably due to the current World Cup football tournament, new figures show.
According to Ipswitch Inc's Network Management Division, bandwidth use is expected to increase by 38.85 per cent to an average of 87 per cent in countries participating in the World Cup. In the UK, bandwidth is expected to increase by 30.79 per cent to 71.85 per cent of total capacity, while in the rest of Europe, bandwidth use is expected to double from 40.25 per cent to 78.67 per cent during key match times. Bandwidth use is expected to be highest in South Africa, the host nation of the sporting tournament, where it will be completely maxed out to 100 per cent from a base average of 58 per cent during a typical working day. Ennio Carboni, president, Ipswitch, Inc's Network Management Division, warned that the increasing bandwidth use for streaming video viewing could have a huge impact on businesses. "Users making use of video streaming services can put a considerable strain on companies' networks, resulting in bandwidth chokes and even outages, in addition to exposing them to security threats," he said. ![]() |
