The England team's World Cup defeat against Germany triggered a record spike in online video viewing on the BBC's web portal, new figures reveal.
According to internet service provider KC, the football led to a 31 per cent increase in web traffic on the BBC's video streaming portal, BBC News reports. The total number of concurrent streams reached a high of 800,000 - a BBC record. It is believed, however, that the overall number of viewers may be many times higher because concurrent streams is the peak number of people watching or listening at any given point during the game and is not the same as the total number of unique users. A spokesperson for the BBC said the corporation set aside as much capacity on its servers as was reasonably possible, but warned users that their own connection speeds could still have an impact of the quality of the stream. "The open internet isn't an end-to-end managed network, so people's experiences vary depending on their internet connection," the spokesperson added. ![]() |
