| Broadband connections increase worldwide |

The number of broadband connections increased by 14 million worldwide during the first quarter of this year, new figures show.
According to data from Broadband Forum and Point Topic GBS, during the first three months of the year, broadband connections increased by 3.12 per cent, representing a 12.41 per cent rise over the year. Asia accounted for a sizeable proportion of broadband connections (53 per cent of total growth), with 45 per cent of all lines added in China during the quarter. Almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of all global connections use DSL technology; one in five (20 per cent) use cable and 12 per cent have access to a fibre network. The UK came in sixth place in terms of total subscribers, coming after France, America, China and Japan. Robin Mersh, chief operating officer at the Broadband Forum, said: "With all the recent technology advancements and service provider pushes, it is great to see how strong broadband continues to grow on a global basis and now backed by some major national government initiatives." ![]() |
