Online retailer Amazon has announced plans to venture into the internet video streaming market.
The company said it has begun talks to develop a broadband subscription television service with media companies such as Time Warner, News Corp, Viacom and NBC Universal. It is thought that the service will be similar to those offered by streaming video providers such as Hulu, Netflix and Google. As part of the services, subscribers will be able to watch content via internet-enabled devices such as Blu-ray players, video game consoles and Smart TVs. Amazon hopes that its existing agreements to sell movies and DVDs will give the company an advantage when negotiating rights to offer an online streaming TV service. One of the potential models would enable Amazon to pay more for DVD inventory in exchange for the rights to distribute shows on a subscription basis. A spokesman for Amazon said he could not speculate about the developments, while sources at NBC Universal, News Corp, Time Warner and Viacom refused to comment. ![]() |
