Streaming media service Netflix has made its first move into original content programming by acquiring 26 episodes of House of Cards.
The Usual Suspects and American Beauty actor Kevin Spacey will star in the programme, which will begin production next spring and be aired on the website towards the end of the year. Chief content officer at Netflix Ted Sarandos said: "David Fincher's unique vision, the indelible performances of Kevin Spacey and the original version of House of Cards all have a big following among our members." House of Cards was originally written by Michael Dobbs and concerned British politics, but the production team have relocated the action to the States. Netflix bought content from Media Rights Capital, with 13 episodes expected to be included in the first season. Last week, research organisation NPD Group revealed Netflix once again dominated the streaming video market in the US, accounting for 61 per cent of digital movies streamed or downloaded.
