An advert-supported streaming media service called Popcornflix has been launched, becoming the first of its kind created by an independent content owner.
Crucially, the service is free for US consumers to watch and will allow users to watch a variety of films. "Popcornflix is one of the few legal, free to the viewer, digital platforms with a dedicated focus on streaming movies while delivering the highest quality digital resolution," remarked Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures, the organisation delivering the streaming media facility. According to the firm, there will be content available from a wide range of genres, including family, drama, horror, comedy and Spanish-language. There will also be a social aspect to the service, with users able to share their thoughts on a movie via their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Last week, Samsung announced its television customers will be able to use on demand streaming services on its new 3D products, with Shrek Forever After and Megamind among the first titles to be shown on the service.
