Research carried out by Ofcom has revealed that the introduction of 4G networks will significantly boost the ability of individuals to download content to their mobile phones.
In replacing 3G, 4G will offer more than 200 per cent of the capacity of the present infrastructure, meaning streaming video and other content will be much faster and easier to get hold of for users. "To put this into context, a user on an early 4G network will be able to download a video in around a third of the time it takes on a 3G network," Dr Stephen Unger, chief technology officer at Ofcom, commented. He added that it is anticipated that this efficiency will increase to approximately 5.5 times (450 percent) by 2020. Figures compiled by ABI Research recently showed that annual data traffic has reached 8,000 petabytes per year at present, with this figure set to double to 16,000 petabytes per annum by 2016.
