Gamers will soon be able to play the latest titles via streaming media over a broadband connection. Using the new OnLive system, recently unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, broadband users could play on-demand games on their television sets through a plug-in device. OnLive, which will work through PCs and Macs through Windows and OS X, does not require a console. Gamers are given a console-style control pad which is similar in appearance to that used for the Microsoft Xbox 360. "We're providing you with the latest high-end titles, the exact same ones you would see at Target or Best Buy, in the same release windows," said OnLive founder and chief operating officer, Steve Perlman, speaking to USA Today. "There's no physical media. It's an all-digital platform. You never need to upgrade your equipment at home." Although no specific launch date has yet been confirmed, reports suggest OnLive will become available before the end of the year. ![]() |
