Digital music service Spotify could revolutionise the way music is consumed, an expert has said. According to Simon Barker, editor of technology website Zath.co.uk, there is a good chance streaming music services, including those requiring subscription fees, could ultimately take over purchasing individual songs as the main way music is acquired. He pinpointed Spotify as currently leading the way in terms of changing the manner in which people consume music, noting that the service is helped by faster and more reliable internet connections. Mr Barker warned however, that iTunes and Microsoft's Zune service could end up becoming more successful than Spotify. "Perhaps Apple are holding back on a potential streaming service, waiting to see how Spotify performs in the knowledge that they could easily roll out a similar service out in an iTunes and iPhone update," he said. Recent statistics from UK Music show that more than two-thirds (68 per cent) of young people use their computer to listen to music everyday. ![]() |
