The Internet Media Device Alliance (IMDA) has announced a new certification standard for internet radio players. IMDA Profile 1 aims to bring together different technologies and "future proofing" web radio product design. As part of the new standard's terms of compliance, all devices will have to decode both WMA and MP3 codecs and receive stereo streams via two channels or by downloading a mix of both. Mark Hopgood, steering committee member of the IMDA and Frontier Silicon's director of marketing, said: "Audio data streaming over the internet is faced with a unique set of challenges. "If a universal standard isn't specified now, when the market for internet radios is in its relative infancy, manufacturers risk entering a technology war like the Betamax/VHS war of the 80s." A new study by QuickPlay Media reveals that there is a growing interest in premium mobile audio streaming services among consumers, with the number of total audio streams consumed in the second quarter this year rising markedly. ![]() |
