Spotify's ability to challenge iTunes' dominance of the market is limited because it lacks portability, an expert has said. Jonathan Shingler, research analyst at GfK Technology, said a lack of robust mobile internet access and the fact premium music users prefer to own their own music, means Spotify may not be able to fully compete with iTunes. He pointed out however, that Spotify is providing competition for iTunes in the direct music streaming market as it "provides a unique take on streaming", allowing users to listen to a song in full, while iTunes provides only short clips or webcasts. "[Spotify] lets you access the song of your choice, whereas iTunes only provides 30-second clips or podcasts, which do not give flexibility," Mr Shingler said. The recent Connected Life study published by market research agency Gfk NOP found that 60 per cent of the 2,000 UK internet users surveyed stream music directly from the internet. Around 17 per cent of those who stream directly use iTunes, while 12 per cent use Spotify. ![]() |
