Channel Five has announced plans to offer viewers the chance to watch its content via streaming video services on social networking site Facebook.
The broadcaster has signed a deal with the social media company to provide streaming content to 26 million UK Facebook users, according to New Media Age. Within the next week to ten days, viewers will be able to watch popular Five programmes such as Australian daytime soaps Home & Away and Neighbours, US offering CSI Miami and home-grown content such as The Gadget Show. The company is thought to be the first UK-based terrestrial broadcaster to embed online video productions on Facebook The service will be similar to other on-demand streaming video content provided by BBC iPlayer and Channel 4's 4oD. Enders analyst Ian Maude said the agreement is a smart move for both Five and Facebook. Speaking to New Media Age, he commented: "If your business is about reaching as many eyeballs as possible, it makes absolute sense to do so on Facebook, especially for a broadcaster like Five that has a relatively small reach online." ![]() |
